First karate class in Tweed Heads South: what to wear, bring and expect

By Sensei Sam Seigers · 4th Dan Seiwakai Goju Ryu · Founder, Yushukan Karate, Tweed Heads South

A practical guide for your first session at the Yushukan Honbu Dojo in Tweed Heads South. What to wear, where to park, what happens in the first ten minutes.

A class at the Yushukan Honbu Dojo

Your first class is meant to be straightforward. Nothing about it requires special gear or prior experience. Here is what to bring, where to go, where to park, and what to expect when you walk in — so nothing feels like a surprise on the day.

What to wear

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in: shorts and a t-shirt, tracksuit pants, or athletic wear. Nothing tight around the legs.
  • No jewellery. Rings, necklaces and earrings all need to come off before you step on the mat.
  • We train in bare feet. No shoes on the mat.

A gi (karate uniform) is not required at the start. If you or your child continue past Karate Ready, a gi can be purchased through the dojo at that point. Nothing is mandatory up front.

What to bring

  • A water bottle. There is no water fountain on the mat.
  • A willingness to try. That is the only real requirement on day one.
  • Your Active and Creative Kids voucher number if you have one — we can apply it to the invoice.

Where to go and where to park

The Yushukan Honbu Dojo is at Unit 3/58 Machinery Drive, Tweed Heads South NSW 2486. Parking is on site. Aim to arrive five minutes before your session starts: it gives you time to find the right unit, settle in, and meet the instructor briefly before the class begins.

For parents dropping off kids

Parents are welcome to stay and watch, especially for the first one or two sessions. After that, some children settle faster when parents are not watching from the side. Follow the lead of the instructor. If your child is anxious, a quick word with Sensei Sam before class starts is always better than trying to manage it mid-session.

What happens in the first ten minutes

The class lines up and bows in. That is the formal start. Then Junbi Undo, the traditional Goju Ryu warm-up and mobility sequence, runs for fifteen minutes in the adult program and a shorter version in the kids class. New students follow along at their own pace. Nobody expects you to know it on day one.

After the warm-up: basic stances, then basic techniques. The instructor demonstrates, the class copies, corrections are given. If something is too difficult, a simpler version is offered. You will not be the only person not getting something in their first class. That is normal and expected.

If you are an adult beginner

You will be in the adult class, not a beginner-only group. Adult classes run mixed grades, which is normal at most traditional dojos. You will follow along at the beginner level and be given adjusted technique where needed. Most adult beginners describe the first class as quieter and more structured than they expected.

If your child is nervous

Tell us before the session, not during it. A quick message when you book or a word at the door when you arrive gives the instructor time to plan a calm start. Nervous children are not called out or pushed into partner work before they are ready. The structure of the class itself usually does most of the settling.

What happens after class

The class bows out and finishes. There is no hard sell at the end of session one. If you have questions about the program, fees or what happens next, ask the instructor then or use the contact page. The next step is Karate Ready — the structured three-week starter — and that decision is yours to make without pressure.
